What has been happening at the MPRC from October through March 2010

We wanted to show in photos some of what is going on at the Mission Point Resource Center in Catacamas, Olancho, Honduras.

We love this job! It is so much fun when someone comes in and we are able to help them read their Bible. Here, Maryuri and Joanne are helping a sister who has not been able to read for a long while. Glasses
Maritza Maritza and her 2 daughters, Yesica (on the right) and Keydi, are a big help to the Center as they help sort and pack lessons. Maritza is one of our volunteer/interns. As she helps she is also learning skills for working in an office environment. Her husband, Lidio Saenz, is the preacher at the Barrio San Isidro congregation. They are doing a tremendous job there.
Axel comes by on a regular basis to sell us fruit. Here he has tangerines which he is selling for 2 lempiras (or about $.10) each. Fruit seller
Marcio Marcio Matamoros is seen here taking 60 Bibles from the MPRC to give to the 2009 graduates of EBS - Escuela El Buen Samaritano (The School of the Good Samaritan). Marcio is on the local board of the school.
Domingo Contreras and his daughter and son, Cenia and Hector, came to the Center on their bikes to pick up materials for their Sunday School classes. Family
Here you see Lidio and Maritza with Joanne. Lidio just received a backpack from the Center. This backpack was very special to the Tomkinses since it was used by their son, Daniel, for many years before he donated it to the MPRC for someone in Honduras to use. Lidio and Maritza
Sharp This boy is Olvin Suazo, the son of Olvin and Lorena, leaders from the congregation at Las Casitas. While they were waiting for Jorge, this helpful guy decided to help us sharpen pencils that get handed out to teachers with Sunday School materials. We appreciate his helpful heart and enterprising spirit.
Pablo Padilla and Juan de la Cruz, a preacher at Rancho Paraiso, came to the MPRC for Magi boxes. While waiting for the boxes to be selected, Juan asked if he could be fitted for reading glasses. When Pablo saw the process of selecting the correct glasses, he asked if he could try some also. We found some low power reading glasses for him. Reading had become more difficult for Pablo, but he had not made the connection that glasses would help. They both were fitted for glasses that greatly helped.

Brother Padilla has replaced Rigoberto Martinez as our coordinator for the Agalta Valley.

From the Agalta Valley
This photo of Chip Buechel shows how big Goliath was at 9 ft tall. Chip, who is a principal in DFW, TX, and who brings groups down to Honduras to help every year, is close to 7 ft tall. Big Chip
Byron Noel Blanca and her 2 sons are shown in this photo. The little one was 6 pounds at 6 months of age. He would surely have died if Joanne had not intervened. With lessons in nutrition and hygiene for the family and additional nutrition, Byron Noel is now thriving.
Dave Muth from the Metro Church in Orlando, FL getting his shoes shined at the Toncontin airport in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He was on his way back to Florida after a productive meeting with the Honduran board and staff of EBS. He and his co-worker, Randy Green, also participated in the January 2010 area-wide worship. Note that the shoe shiners love the Texas Aggies. Dave Muth
Marlon Molina and Marel Bados, the 2 preachers from Jutiquile, meet at the Center to discuss the days activities in their community. 2 preachers
Backpacks Maritza and her son, Orlen, exhibit the backpacks full of school materials that their family received from the MPRC.
Staff meeting with Ron Carter, Joanne Tomkins, Marel Bados, and Marlon Molina. Staff meeting
Staff Meeting with Marel, Marlon, Jorge Vargas, and Ron. Note that the cake on the table is for Marel's Birthday, Feb 4. We won't tell you how old he is other than to say that he is more than a 1/3 of a century now. Also note that Ron and Marlon are slightly older than that. And thirdly note that while Ron hails from Prattville, AL, we are fairly sure that his cap on the table has nothing to do with college football national championships. Staff Meeting
Javier and sons Javier Perez and his 2 sons, Sony and Kevin, enjoy a game of Frozen Bubble in the computer lab just before school starts for the year (Feb). Note that Javier had left them there while he did his Friday radio program. When he came back, they were still not ready to leave. Imagine that!
Joanne Tomkins is using the computer lab to finish up a course in BioStatistics, a requirement for her Doctoral degree in Public Health. Shhh!
Ron Carter and Jorge Vargas delivered a mechanized hospital bed to the public hospital in Juticalpa, the capital of Olancho. Here you see Jorge and 2 of the administrators of the hospital. This hospital has a tremendous need for working equipment. Bed
