The El Colegio church of Christ, named for the barrio (neighborhood) where it is situated, is the second oldest church of Christ in Catacamas, Olancho, Honduras. The barrio is named El Colegio because it is where the main high school (colegio) for Catacamas is located. The congregation was started around 1982 in association with the beginning of the work at the Predisan Medical Clinic, located about 1 mile east, to minister to the Christians working there El Colegio Worship and still hosts many North American visitors to Predisan. But membership now is comprised of Christians from throughout the Catacamas area.

El Colegio is very active throughout all of Olancho, with regular church gatherings five days a week but uncountable outreach and edification activities on-going as well. They participate in preaching at the Cerepa drug and alcohol recovery facility, have ongoing small group evangelistic Bible studies throughout Catacamas, and other evangelistic activities within the schools and communities. Hugo Espinol, the preacher at El Colegio for roughly 5 years, is also head of an emergency relief project in Catacamas and is actively involved in many outreach projects. Check out their own website at http://IglesiadeCristo-ElColegio.org for a full range of photos and activities.

Church membership currently lists 150 Christians, Childrens Day with a regular Sunday attendance between 80-120. Many strong church leaders make up the core of the spiritual force for the El Colegio congregation. The oldest member of the congregation may be 94 years old but no one is sure.

Sunday morning worship at 9am is comprised of the entire congregation. Three children's classes and one teen class cover the Sunday School range from 4 years old to 22 years old, and adult Bible study classes are offered on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday nights. There are two adult Sunday classes; one in Christian Theology for new Christians and one is a correspondence course called CELO for older Christians desiring to increase their understanding of the scriptures. In addition, there is a meeting of all young men at 6pm every Monday night, a prayer meeting at 6pm every Friday night, Smiles and a Ladies Activity at 3pm every Saturday.

Currently, El Colegio is focusing on 7 improvement projects targeted for 2009 and is seeking any assistance possible. Among them are re-roofing the leaking classrooms, purchasing or constructing more classroom tables and chairs for the expanding Sunday School classes, constructing a privacy wall on an exposed side to keep the chickens and dogs in their own yard, and repairing the edifice outside. El Colegio is a congregation worth visiting if one should have opportunity while in the Catacamas area. And perhaps a group might have the opportunity to help with the 2009 summer projects as well.
